Unusual Holiday Houses in the UK

If you want a holiday to remember you don’t have to go as far as you would think – in fact there are some incredibly unusual holiday houses in the UK. So much so that it’s nigh on impossible to narrow it down! Will you choose England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland? Will you head for the coast, the mountains or the countryside? Are you planning a group getaway with friends and family or a romantic retreat? Whatever you’re looking for and whenever you want to go, there’s definitely somewhere to fit the bill, it’s just a question of decision-making!

Unusual holiday houses in the UK come in all shapes and sizes, but here are a few of our favourites to tickle your fancy…

The treehouse hideaway

This house is actually called The Treehouse Hideaway, and it does exactly what it says on the tin! Who didn’t daydream about living in a treehouse when they were a child? But this is not exactly a draughty, uncomfortable hut. This place, 6 metres off the ground in the Kentish countryside, comes complete with under floor heating, Sky TV, luxurious furnishings, a log burner and even a private hot tub. Both inside and out, this is about an unusual as it gets, and it’s made just for two.

The Cotswolds work of art

Contemporary, chic and eco-friendly to boot, this stunningly designed property with its flagstone floors and inglenook fireplace is magnificent and unique in equal measure. The Chestnuts leaves nothing to be desired in terms of cutting edge interiors, but it also satisfies on every other level, from the luxury bathrooms and culinary delights, to the secluded garden and beautiful views.

The historic tower house

Just 2 miles from the centre of Edinburgh, with spectacular views of the city, is Liberton Tower, a 15th century tower house with enormous atmosphere and character. Old features like slit windows, vaulted ceilings, stone staircases and tapestries are still very much in evidence, and modern comforts like under floor heating and up-to-date technology have been added. If you want to experience a little piece of authentic history, this is the place.

The luxury windmill

This converted mill on the Isle of Anglesey dates back to 1741 but has been thoroughly modernised to create a truly fabulous and luxurious space. The immaculate furnishings and private spa hot tub are tempting enough, but the selling point here is really the top floor, from where there are breathtaking views out over the sea towards Puffin Island. A holiday here is unforgettable.

The beach house

Sometimes only the coast will do, and if you’re a seaside lover then you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere as remarkable as The Beach House in Cornwall. The hot tub on the terrace, which looks directly out over the water, is an undoubtedly tempting feature, but you will also be reeled in by the suspended wood burner, oak tree dining table, hydrotherapy bath, eccentric games room and sumptuous bedrooms and bathrooms.

Scotland’s Private Islands – have one all to yourself!

If you thought that staying on your own private island would cost the earth, then think again.  Here at One Off Places we have just introduced two charming holiday cottages on the Isle of Scalpay – a small island on a stretch of water between the Applecross Peninsula and the Isle of Skye on Scotland’s west coast.

Arrival at your private island

Arrival at your private island

The island consists of 600 acres of woodland, and a plethora of freshwater lochs and burns.  There is 14 miles of shoreline and open hills rising from the sea.  It is a secluded and tranquil island retreat – the perfect place for experiencing rugged Scotland, with its abundant flora and fauna.

Believe it or not, it does not take you a week to get there either!  Fly or train to Inverness and you will find yourself just two hours from Scalpay.  A week’s holiday here will not feel like enough.  You can go boating and fishing, bird watching, walking, photography and painting.  On your walks you are quite likely to encounter birds of prey, weasels and otters.  In the sea you might be lucky enough to spot whales and dolphins.  Go mackerel fishing, take the boat to Skye and just hunker down in your very own wilderness.
