Holiday in Slovenia – alpine lakes to snow dusted mountains….

Mountain Retreat in Slovenia

Mountain Retreat in Slovenia

When you’re running through a list in your head of places to visit, a holiday in Slovenia probably doesn’t even feature. But it should! This tiny little country (the population is just 2 million), has a lot more to offer than its size would suggest. Boasting everything from Alpine lakes and snow-dusted mountains to beautiful beaches and lush forests, a holiday in Slovenia really should be on your radar. There are probably a lot of people who don’t even know where it is? The country is bordered by Austria, Italy, Croatia and Hungary and this is what makes it so special – it combines the Alps with the Mediterranean. So, it doesn’t really matter what sort of holiday you’re looking for, because it’s all here!

Certainly in terms of natural beauty, a holiday in Slovenia is unbeatable.  It is known as an incredibly green country because so much of it is covered in verdant forest, and this makes it the perfect destination for a variety of outdoor pursuits from hiking and cycling to climbing and horse riding. There are also some truly picture-perfect lakes where you can bathe and go boating while you’re on holiday in Slovenia. Lake Bohinj is one of the most idyllic, Lake Bled is 14,000 years old and has an island in the middle with a church on it, and Lake Velenje is the deepest, going down to an almost terrifying depth of 54 metres. The banks of these lakes provide sensational views and abundant picnic spots. The rivers and waterfalls are no less impressive – you could raft down the Soca River or follow the streams to the incredible Karstic caves, of which there are more than 8,000 in total. If you’re looking for natural phenomena, a holiday in Slovenia is the way to experience them.

It would be easy to write pages and pages about the wonderful landscape of this little republic. There are dozens of natural parks to visit, the snow-capped mountains are criss-crossed with walking trails, and the wildlife is extraordinarily varied, from deer and brown bears to the rarer sights of wolves and wildcats. But a holiday in Slovenia offers so much more. Why not start in the capital town of Ljubljana? Take the funicular up to the castle, visit the National Gallery, or just enjoy strolling around the picturesque streets and sitting in the buzzing cafes. Another town worth a visit while on holiday in Slovenia is Ptuj, which has a wealth of medieval history including a castle, monasteries and churches. On the whole, if you’re interested in history and architecture, a holiday in Slovenia is heaven! Sempeter, a Roman-era necropolis is a must-visit and Predjama Castle is one of the most impressive fortresses you are ever likely to see.

From the mountains of Triglav National Park and the therapeutic thermal springs to the Skocjan Caves (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the palace in Koper, a holiday in Slovenia is full of diverse surprises. You never know quite what you might discover next but whatever it is, it will take your breath away.

Unusual Holiday Houses in the UK

If you want a holiday to remember you don’t have to go as far as you would think – in fact there are some incredibly unusual holiday houses in the UK. So much so that it’s nigh on impossible to narrow it down! Will you choose England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland? Will you head for the coast, the mountains or the countryside? Are you planning a group getaway with friends and family or a romantic retreat? Whatever you’re looking for and whenever you want to go, there’s definitely somewhere to fit the bill, it’s just a question of decision-making!

Unusual holiday houses in the UK come in all shapes and sizes, but here are a few of our favourites to tickle your fancy…

The treehouse hideaway

This house is actually called The Treehouse Hideaway, and it does exactly what it says on the tin! Who didn’t daydream about living in a treehouse when they were a child? But this is not exactly a draughty, uncomfortable hut. This place, 6 metres off the ground in the Kentish countryside, comes complete with under floor heating, Sky TV, luxurious furnishings, a log burner and even a private hot tub. Both inside and out, this is about an unusual as it gets, and it’s made just for two.

The Cotswolds work of art

Contemporary, chic and eco-friendly to boot, this stunningly designed property with its flagstone floors and inglenook fireplace is magnificent and unique in equal measure. The Chestnuts leaves nothing to be desired in terms of cutting edge interiors, but it also satisfies on every other level, from the luxury bathrooms and culinary delights, to the secluded garden and beautiful views.

The historic tower house

Just 2 miles from the centre of Edinburgh, with spectacular views of the city, is Liberton Tower, a 15th century tower house with enormous atmosphere and character. Old features like slit windows, vaulted ceilings, stone staircases and tapestries are still very much in evidence, and modern comforts like under floor heating and up-to-date technology have been added. If you want to experience a little piece of authentic history, this is the place.

The luxury windmill

This converted mill on the Isle of Anglesey dates back to 1741 but has been thoroughly modernised to create a truly fabulous and luxurious space. The immaculate furnishings and private spa hot tub are tempting enough, but the selling point here is really the top floor, from where there are breathtaking views out over the sea towards Puffin Island. A holiday here is unforgettable.

The beach house

Sometimes only the coast will do, and if you’re a seaside lover then you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere as remarkable as The Beach House in Cornwall. The hot tub on the terrace, which looks directly out over the water, is an undoubtedly tempting feature, but you will also be reeled in by the suspended wood burner, oak tree dining table, hydrotherapy bath, eccentric games room and sumptuous bedrooms and bathrooms.

Winter Sunshine and Safaris in Kent from One Off Places

So it seems that you don’t have to fly at vast expense to get yourself some winter sunshine and a dawn safari.  You could be forgiven for thinking that I’d gone mad, but no, it has just dawned on me that of all the fabulous regions we have One Off Places, our One Off Places in Kent are as diverse as they get.

Handcrafted treehouse

Handcrafted treehouse

For the romantic types, it’s all about the hand crafted treehouse, an exquisite labour of love which sleeps 2 people in luxurious surroundings, and has a bubbling hot tub at the foot of the tree.  Romance personified.

Livingstone Lodge safari tents

Livingstone Lodge safari tents

If you want to treat the children to a safari, without the expense, the malarial tables and the time off work, then head for a long weekend down to Livingstone Lodge or Elephant Lodge, a collection of safari tents in Port Lympne Wild Animal Park.  You’ll get the full safari experience – a tented lodge, a deck looking out onto a waterhole, and the opportunity to go out on safaris to get up close and personal with the animals.

Sun room in beachfront house

Sun room in beachfront house

And then we have the exclusive (but amazingly well priced) beachfront house with its very own Real Sunlight multi sensory room.  The perfect beach and summer holiday all year round – you can head a few steps out of your door to the beach on sunny days, and enjoy completely safe sunbathing in the sun room, and films in the cinema room, on rainy days.  It sleeps up to 6 people and the interior of the house is the height of luxury.

The Retreat near Canterbury
